NRG set to replace Sizz with EPICJonny as coach
Following a disappointing finish in the Closed Qualifiers, NRG is looking to part ways with head coach Emiliano "Sizz" Benny. His replacement is expected to be Jonathan "EPICJonny" Ramrattan, the current substitute on the roster.
After scraping a top-eight finish at worlds, many believed the squad of Garrett "GarrettG" Gordon, Mariano "SquishyMuffinz" Arruda, and Justin "jstn." Morales was destined to shake things up. The team was no longer a threat, even after expectations of being possible world champions and dominating during the Fall and Winter Split. As the offseason concluded, the team decided to stick, which would prove to be a blunder after failing to make top 8 for the Fall Open. Many fans were perplexed, pondering whether NRG could place high enough in the second Regional to get an invite for the third.
The decision to keep the active roster and change the coach comes as just as much of a surprise, however. Sizz has been coaching NRG for three years, as he has supported the squad through RLCS Season 8, 9, X, and the 2021-22 season. His coaching achievements include a World Championship title in Madrid, dominance through RLCS X, and a hard-fought second place at the 2021-22 Fall Major. Only in more recent times, NRG haven’t been able to live up to their name as one of North America’s best.
With the addition of EPICJonny to the coaching role, NRG hope to clean up on their persisting issues. With EPICJonny having a close connection to jstn after teaming under Out of Style for a season, this change has the potential to work wonders.
The expected roster entering the Closed Qualifier for the Fall Cup is as follows:
🇺🇸 Garrett "GarrettG" Gordon
🇨🇦 Mariano "SquishyMuffinz" Arruda
🇺🇸 Justin "jstn." Morales
🇺🇸 Jonathan "EPICJonny" Ramrattan (coach)
